The Accounting Fundamentals Certificate serves as the foundation of a customizable training plan for those seeking a career in accounting. It can be stacked with our 9-course Accounting Certificate, which encompasses the coursework and topics needed to prepare for the CPA Exam, or build upon your knowledge with our 3- or 4-course specializations:

  • Intermediate Accounting: Broaden your expertise in reviewing and creating financial statements, examining cash flow, inventories and deprecation, and more. (3 courses)
  • Focuses in Accounting: Build your understanding in financial and internal auditing, federal taxation and international accounting. (4 courses)
  • Advanced Accounting: Cover the advanced concepts needed prepare for the CPA exam or to move into a more senior accounting position. (3 courses)

Courses are offered both online and in the classroom for both certificate programs and all three specializations. These programs can be completed 100% online.

Getting Started

UCLA Extension allows you to join a community with a rich history, vast industry networks, industry expert instructors and distinguished alumni. We have flexible class options, and you get UCLA credit on your transcript in courses you finish. 

Depending on your goals, there are two ways to enroll.

Open Enrollment

Simply register, and start your coursework. UCLA Admission is not required to begin your continuing education journey.

Apply for Certificate Candidacy

Candidacy benefits include a wide range of student perks (more below). You can still take classes at your own pace.

Submitting your application for candidacy is easy. 

Students who intend to receive their Certificate in Accounting Fundamentals are encouraged to apply for candidacy before starting coursework for acceptance to the program. 


Depending on your Enrollment status, there are a number of benefits to becoming a UCLA Extension student.

Test Out a Class 
This allows you to ensure the program is right for your future. After taking a class, you can always establish Candidacy later.

Become a Certificate Candidate
Do you expect to finish your Certificate with UCLA Extension? Applying for Candidacy and submitting your application fee should be a high priority, so you can enjoy exclusive perks:

  • Access to various campus resources, like the UCLA Recreation Center (for local Candidates)
  • Cement your student journey, exempt from future Certificate curriculum changes 
  • Receive your official UCLA Extension certificate upon program completion
  • Invitation to UCLA Extension Graduation Ceremony after finishing all coursework
  • Admission into the UCLA Alumni Association upon Certificate completion


You will pay for the courses you take each quarter, rather than paying for the entire program at once.  Course costs vary, and do not include required materials. Application fees are paid only by students who apply to become Certificate Candidates.
